Employer Liaison Group relaunches with event for students, staff and companies

The Faculty of Science Employer Liaison Group relaunched with an event for employers, academic staff and students across the seven departments.

There were a broad range of employers, from global chemical companies to SMEs, and they all came with one thing in common: an interest in the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Science students.

During the event, three employers gave insightful presentations about the skills they look for from the students and graduates they recruit. These were followed by a networking session where students and academic staff were given the opportunity to speak informally with employers.

Students were given lots of useful messages and a few highlights were:

  • Nationally 50% of graduate schemes are open to graduates from any discipline
  • To stand out you must show an interest in the organisation. Do some research!
  • Communication skills are more than making presentations. It also means listening, persuading and negotiating. Think about when you have demonstrated these skills!
  • Stand out by gaining and demonstrating as many different experiences as possible and showing a passion for these. Know your strengths. You do not have to be good at everything!

Feedback from this event, which took place in May, has been positive and it is now being used to plan future events which will be held in semester one of the next academic year.
