Inspiring scientists chosen by students to talk about their subjects

Some of the most inspiring lecturers in the Faculty of Science will be talking about their specialist subjects in the Students’ Union this week and next.

Under the banner of ‘Inspiration & Co’, 12 lecturers were chosen by students to speak about their subject.

Representing the Faculty of Science are Professor Mike Siva-Jothy, head of the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, and Professor Milton Wainwright from the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.

Professor Siva-Jothy will give his talk – The Battle Of The Sexes: What ’Traumatic’ Copulation Tells Us About Evolution – at 1pm on Thursday. Professor Wainwright is speaking as part of a double-header with Dr David Forrest from the School of English, noon-2pm next Thursday, 27 March.

Professor Wainwright’s talk is called Causing Trouble In The Nicest Possible Way. All of the talks take place in the Students’ Union Auditorium.

The first Inspiration & Co lecture took place yesterday, with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health’s Dr Allan Pacey (who also leads the MSc Science Communication course) speaking about fertility.

Next Tuesday, 25 March, the Department of Journalism Studies’ Jairo Lugo-Ocando, who teaches on the Faculty of Science’s MSc Science Communication Course too, will also give an Inspiration & Co lecture. His talk is called Media, Inequality And Social Change.
