Launch of Womens Network

Launch in Tapestry room

On 26th June the Faculties of Science and Engineering launched a new Women in STEM network. Over 70 staff attended the launch from the two faculties alongside representatives of the Equality and Diversity Board and the Vice Chancellor. The event was the culmination of two months of EPSRC funded activities addressing the factors that affect the retention and progression of women in Science and Engineering subjects. The Network will allow staff in the two faculties to meet and hold events, to include informal mentoring, lectures, training sessions, lobbying for change and outreach to younger scientists. Dr Jane Grasby (Chemistry), who spoke at the Network launch on behalf of the Faculty of Science, commented,  “The majority of women with qualifications in Science and Mathematics subjects do not work in STEM areas. This is in marked contrast to men and is particularly acute in UK academia. The consequence is a serious loss of talent across the Higher Education sector and the UK economy. We hope that in Sheffield the Network will help us take action on this.”
