Prizes for exceptional staff contributions

Professor Tony Ryan presents Dr David Finger with the Prize for Best Researcher

Staff in the Faculty of Science have been handed prizes in recognition of their exceptional contributions.

At today’s Faculty Forum, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Tony Ryan presented Dr David Finger with the 2014 award Prize for Best Researcher.

David works in Chemistry with Professor Jane Grasby. He was awarded the prize for the wide range of departmental duties he has taken on – from mentoring and training students to helping maintain and purchase new equipment, induct new staff and set up Chemistry Researchers Society.

He has also worked on the development at postdoctoral staff at a national and international level, through his involvement in the US National Postdoctoral Association, the UK Research Staff Association and the International Consortium of Research Staff Associations, as well as commenting on EU policy and speaking at events in Brazil, Lithuania and Austria.

Certificates were also handed out to six members of staff who received a special Save The Day Award, to thank them for their efforts in response to the fire in the Alfred Denny Building last year. The six staff were:

  • Alison Blake, Stuart Pearce and John Beresford from Animal and Plant Sciences
  • Paul Turner from Chemistry
  • Joanne Bland from Biological Services
  • Darren Rose from the Faculty of Science team
