Study shows getting students to write their own text book can help improve exam results

An innovative learning and teaching project has shown how getting students to write their own text book can help them improve their exam scores.

A study was led by Dr Tom Stafford in Psychology, who removed the textbook from a course he ran and replaced it with a wiki – an editable set of webpages that allowed students to, effectively, write their own text book.

It found that the students who made the most edits to the wiki got higher exam results than those who made the fewest.

The research was supported with a Faculty of Science learning and teaching grant and has now been published in Research in Learning Technology.
